There is no doubt we would have been better off now if Remain had won, but assuming it was a narrow victory I don’t think it would have calmed anything. The opposite probably.

That was the genius of Cameron’s plan. Either he lost or a narrow result poisoned British politics for a generation anyway. Once the referendum was announced we were pretty screwed (barring an overwhelming Remain victory).

Still, at least Cameron has made a few bob since leaving office.
