The MCC have fudged it completely and now claim it is without a proper explanation, but no it isn't (or at least shouldn't be, and most certainly wasn't at the time).

To paraphrase without Googling the Laws:

The act of completing a catch begins when the player first makes contact with the ball, and ends when the player has the ball under full control.

During the act of completing a catch, the player is not allowed to leave the field of play.

The match report in question:

http://static.espncricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1996/ENG_LOCAL/CC/R20/GLOUCS_KENT_CC_19-21SEP1996_MR

He hooked Mark Alleyne to the square-leg boundary where Symonds palmed the ball up, stepped back over the line and then came
back into play to complete what he thought was a catch.

The crowd, too, were mystified when the umpires indicated that
Ward was not out - but they were right: Law 32.2 (a) says it is
a fair catch if "the fieldsman is within the field of play
throughout the act of making the catch".

That's precisely the fudge I was referring to. The explanation is terrible and doesn't account for the wording of the Laws.

Shirley it's not a foul ball until the ball lands (usually in the crowd tbf). I'm sure I've seen games where a fielder is poised to catch a ball heading into foul territory, cock up the catch, and the runners then advance on an Error.

Ooo. Pereira gone again. 6-1.

It was clearly *going* to be a foul ball, the fielder was already stood in foul territory.

You're right about players advancing even on a foul ball if a fielder makes contact with the ball (but doesn't catch it).

Even though I was willing the end of the season to arrive, I must admit that I'm finding Saturday afternoons particularly boring without football.

Cricket is alright, but it's just not the same, and tennis can FRO.

Slowly but surely though, the new season is now starting to take shape.

We may have missed football, but at least there has been a fare bit if football to watch on TV while we wait.
There doesn't seem to be anything specifically interesting in July, but this website keeps you up to date with what football is on TV while we wait.

I have seen at least 3 papers describe their fixture pull outs as 'brilliant.' All three are just a list of the fixtures as shown everywhere else. Hardly worth of the tag 'brilliant'.

also Morecambe COC tie with Wolves

Can anyone fathom why this would be on telly? Blackpool vs Preston I could just about understand in terms of local rivalry, but why Moorcumb vs Wolves?

The tie of the round (according to everyone in the press) doesn't get the gig. Grrrr.

At our natural level since May 2012.

Wolves will probably have more fans watching?
It's generally nothing to do with how decent the tie is, it's about how many armchair fans a club has. That's why, when Man Yoo are playing, they'll always be televised
