AAARGH, I'm skint

Thanks to getting my last months salary halfway through december and wasting it on presents and going out I am now going to be eating soup in the cold for the next 3 weeks. Has anyone else similarly mismanaged their festive finances? Could anyone who hasn't give me their money? Can I get a loan from the FA? Ta.

To be fair, it's made fresh and advertised as salt-free etc so I add my own :-)

There is actually a cheaper option of a plate of chips and a roll but it'd be like some squalid version of supersize me if I took that option till the end of the month

I was about to say £25 would buy me a whole shop for a week on a limited budget. One home cooking day to batch cook meals and then freeze and take out what is necessary. Three proper meals a day, not soup and a roll.

Soup is a very good meal, depending on what you put in it.
Very good for long slow release of energy, body uses less energy to break it down.

It usually takes 20-25 minutes to make a delicious nutritious soup.

If I'm cooking from scratch, aside from roast dinners, nearly all my main meals are cooked in 25 mins.

Try it sometime; it will taste so much better than shop bought.

And you can be doing something else whilst it's cooking.

For the unitiated:
1 supermarket stewpack of vegetables £1
1 vegetable stock cube
Seasoning (usually pepper only; there is enough salt in the stock cube)
1.5 pints water
Chilli flakes

Peel and chop the vegetables
Cover with boiling water
Mix in the stock cube
Bring slowly to the boil
Season
Simmer for 25-45 minutes (depending on the vegetables) with the lid on the saucepan.
Remove from heat. Blend.
Serve with chilli flakes

I'm always of the mind to organise sandwiches etc, but doesn't it mean either:
A) Eating the same fucking sarnies all week.
B) Not eating the same sarnies but having half-used packets of stuff you've opened slowly turning in your fridge?
C) Not eating the same sarnies by buying really really small and uneconomic portions of sandwich stuff, like individual babybels and those 60p packets of ham that have 2 slices in? It's nearly as expensive as buying sarnies.

We had chicken for dinner saturday and Roast beef on Sunday. I've been having leftovers from both alternated in sandwiches all week, should have just about enough beef left for tomorrow then Friday i'm only in half day, so my total cost for lunch this week is about the cost of half a loaf of bread, 45p.

even if i don't have leftovers, a few slices of ham etc from the deli for the week is only a couple of quid.

The thing with leftovers is that if it was nice to eat it wouldn't get leftover in my house. Looking in the food bin, my leftovers would be half a morrisons cornish pastie and some cold pasta jettisoned by my kids for having "yukky sauce" on.

I used to work for a company that paid everyone early in December and it was a fucking nightmare as you might have to go 7 weeks between salary payments. They should pay on the normal bloody day in December. It is bad enough that January is such a long month - I did dry January 2 years ago and after agreeing to do it I realized there were SIX weekends in the month - never again.

I think it's really helpful, as means you can sort out bills early and just gives a bit extra for any last minute presents, nights out and food/seeing friends etc for christmas week.

Just don't be a numpty and remember you won't get paid again until end of Jan and don't spend everything you've just been paid in a week. It's not rocket science.

The other reason for it is payroll aren't in over christmas, so have to process it whilst they are at work.

I tend to see what I have left over after the bills I pay myself (DDs and SOs are automatically separated into a "bills" account), then split it so I have a weekly budget.

As it happens I still have a fair bit of cash left over from my consolidation stuff in late November, which has meant even splitting over 5+ weeks I've been a lot more flush than usual this month. Yay me. The February payday, with a short month, no Council Tax and paying 200 quid less per month than I was previously, will be RICH RICH RICH.

I had a Lucozade Sport yesterday, think it was the first drink I'd had other than water in over a week.

Genuinely seeing how long I can go without alcohol. Haven't had a drink since the early hours of New Year and don't miss it. But I've never been one for a casual drink or two, it has to be at least six or seven, which is quite problematic, even though that's only once a week.

I don't abstain, but I drink maybe once a week. It's for health really. Trust me, your body will bear the brunt and your face will age with regular drinking. Plus the damage to internal organs. Replace drinking with exercise, you'll find it more rewarding.

People ask me how I still look so young. I tell them that alcohol is a great preservative.

My liver is going to take a bit of a hit this month. It will cope.

I agree that abstaining is pointless, unless your an alcoholic who needs to stop. Moderation, 14 units a week, which is 5-7 pints. Plus 3 hours of cardio exercise, even swift walking counts.

Agreed, I mean I got through it, but six weekends, I didn't think it was possible, it was NYD on the Friday IIRC. I think the 31st was the Sunday and we caved in and had a few wines to celebrate (nearly) doing the whole month. It was fine until about the 4th weekend in Jan when it really began to get boring.

not actually possible. 31/7 = 4.4 weekends. So max you can have is 5 weekends.

Last NYD was Friday, yes. So you had weekend of Sat 2nd, Sat 9th, Sat 16th, Sat 23rd & Sat 30th.

It may have been 6 weekends between paydays?

Just got to the point where i was hating every day there after 16 years, thinking to myself 'there has to be another way'

Dealing with the deaths (73) of colleagues and their families began to weigh heavy on me as well as dealing with 30something managers who speak like they are reading a 'power management' text book. All the words but no real experience

So, it was a case of Jan 1st and go for it, I might miss it and go back as they have to keep the job open for me, they might pay me off or I might find something else I want to do. Day 11 now, still weird feeling 'I should be somewhere' during the day but walking 5 miles a day and sleeping really well

Hi-jacking this a little bit, the 30something managers element seems to be even lower at my gaff. People in their mid-20s absolutely obsessed with having "Manager" in their title over exec, because they feel it shows their true experience. Some of these people here less than a year. Is this a new thing? I've always been of the belief that experience counteracts any name someone gives you.

EDIT - TARA am I wrong here? You're most likely to know.

Good for you.

I have done 19 years here next month and don't have the same stresses as you but job and people are really grating now. I was told that when you have more bad days than good then it is time to move on and that is now most definitely the case.

It would have to be a clean break and I could easily take two/three months off but then I need to be earning and at a reasonable level as well.

I got someone to re-do my CV for me after all this time and its amazing the amount of things you are doing that other employers would want, unless you cost the earth then experience really does make a difference

I'm not even going to start looking until April anyway, just clearing my head for now
