Your favourite 80s pop song

I’ve recently realised that stuff I regarded as shite at the time is pretty good. Difficult to pinpoint one song but I’ve always loved this and it takes me right back to 1980 when I was eleven years old.

My music tastes have started orientating back to the 80's, much like yourself. I now find myself singing along to stuff from the Pet Shop Boys, Erasure etc. Stuff that I hated as a kid.

Anywho, one of my real favourites is "take on me" by A-ha. It's the first song I really remember.

Tiffany - I think we're alone now

A version of that used to be a sung on the York Road terraces:

“I think we’re at home now, there doesn’t seem to be anyone around”

Hasn’t worked of late, what with us romping to the National League South title, and then finishing top half of the National League above sides like Leyton Orient, while averaging well over 1,000 at York Road every other week, although it might well make a return in the not-too-distant future!

It's 1977 and the two lads who went on to form The Korgis were renting a house near us in Bath - the street where they lived was closed for a Jubilee street party and the local publican knew that they were musicians and cajoled them into playing at the street party.

They were asked to stop after about 10 minutes as they insisted on playing their own stuff and not 'things people know and can dance to.' True story.

Belfast Child by Simple Minds always springs to mind for me when the 80s comes up although right at the end.

https://youtu.be/7vhhTvcLoRw

Street Fighting Years was a good album as well. Another one from it:

https://youtu.be/GqpAY2OBJzc

Another that sparks memories as it always seemed to be playing somewhere was Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics. Obviously wasn't but always seemed to be played on the BBC.

Good shout; a gem. I wasn't aware until now that they were founded by two members of early '70s prog/psych rock combo Stackridge; a sound musical pedigree but complete change of direction.

This is a personal favourite, from Thora's old band, which also underwent a later change of direction, producing strange, beautiful albums like 'Spirit of Eden':

I've Been In Love Before by Cutting Crew is as good as any.

And my little brother loved listening to Japan, which of course I therefore had to dislike. I like them really!

For the perfect pop rock album go straight to Reckless by Bryan Adams. Not a duff tune thereon.
