Chris Froome

Ouch. Hits a wall at 55km/h. Broken femur, hip, elbow and ribs. Lost consciousness. I fear what sort of stress there's been to the brain in a deceleration like that too.

I reckon it might be career ending but it could have been even worse.

Watching the Critérium de Dauphiné and they are reporting that Froome has won the 2011 Vuelta España as the bloke who 'won' it 8 years ago has today been disqualified.

Impressive work winning a Grand Tour from Intensive care.

It'll piss of Bradley Wiggins even more now as Froome was supposed to be riding as his domestique.

An evening feast on an aborted foetus, with its blood injected straight into his bloodstream and he'll be racing again tomorrow.

even a speedway rider would struggle to come back quickly after a broken right femur.

if he lost consciousness as a result of the crash i'd say there's every likelyhood of concussion*

*i am not a doctor.

and just to be pedantic i doubt the gust of wind just took his front wheel. more likely took his whole body and bicycle combined and caused him a front wheel wobble.

I’m sure he just stood up and cracked on, not like these mollycoddled preening footballers.

Yes, sounds nasty. On the radio Dave Braislford was saying he took his hand off the handle bar to wipe his nose and he got hit with a cross wind and so just lost control and hit the wall hard.

Sadly at his age this is going to be hard to come back from. He'd chucked everything into the Tour De France this year as well not defending his Giro.

Big moment for Thomas now. It's one thing winning it as a co leader but now he is the main man that every other team will be watching and marking.

I'm wondering whether he took both hands off is the real problem. I can't see how you'd ever lose control of a bike with one hand on the bars. I notice how they seem to ride 'no hands' a lot more than seems wise to me whilst removing clothing, taking drinks, eating etc.

It was the combination of one hand and a cross wind suddenly hitting....apparently

One handed at 30mph with aero wheels and TT bike any sort of cross wind and your going to be struggling to keep that up right even with Froome levels of bike handling

i hadnt appreciated it was a time trial bike when i made my earlier comment. is the reason front wheel spoilers on long track speedway bikes were banned. you don't want the gust of wind giving you a wobble at 100mph.

He went no hands to take off a jersey he was wearing. That's when the gust hit him and he made acquaintances with the wall.

EDIT: BBC news says he took one hand off to blow his nose but they said on a live report yesterday from the scene that he was taking off a jersey.
