Ex Premier League Players playing for your club

Thinking the other day & hoping that Ross McCormack doesn't turn out to be shit (Hi Dougie)..... His 1st appearance of season was Tuesday coming on in the 5-0 win at Dover.... And how we seem to have had an awful lot of ex premier players play for us that have turn out to be shit and some good.

Darren Barnard - very good
Paul Kitson - shit
Jason Lee - Signed but never played
Karl Ready - pretty shit
Marcus Gayle - pretty good
Andy Pearce - worst of the bunch
Glen Little - very good techically but could hardly move
Ricky Newman - good
Teddy Sheringham - he had abit of decent career didn't he

Anybodys team had any shit ex premier players?

Two of our best players dropped from Premier League to us due to injury

Simon Webster (defender - West Ham)
Tony Roberts (Goalkeeper - QPR)

Other good players
Brian Stein (striker - 32 goals in 42 games)
Clive Goodyear (ex-wimbledon penalty giver away in cup final)
Paul Price (ex-Spurs)
Wayne Andrews (who dropped down to our level before making it back to the premier league)
Jonathan Hunt (who actually played one game for us in 1990 before going to the premier league and then back to us)

We had some proper 'meh'
Andy Linighan (mainly Arsenal)
Paul Furlong & Barry Hayles who formed a partnership in excess of 80 years old
Micah Hyde

Special mention for Amara Simba, who played for Paris SG and had 3 french caps, he was ace

Jonathan Hunt played in the PL?!

Think I saw his football league debut. Second fiddle to Paul Showler most of his time, but he was an unusually technically gifted player.

Slabber scored a last minute equaliser in our play off SF2L at Carlisle. Forcing the game into extra time and eventually penalties.

Of those in my lifetime:
Jason Dodd - sold to Southampton after a handful of games for us. Didn't see him play for us. Decent career with them.
Tony Gill - made a couple of apps for us, maybe as player assistant, when we were relegated in 1997.
Paul Bodin - came back as player manager having been with us in the 80s, played for Swindon in their only PL season. Excellent for us, interviewed him over lockdown and he's still a top man.
Bobby Zamora - loan to us in 2000 from Bristol Rovers scoring eight in six, within a few years he was playing in the FA Cup Final.
John Williams - was with Coventry 1992-94 in the PL I think. Flying Postman. Had a decent season with us 2004/05 after a slow start.
Joe Bryan - didn't get much of a look-in on loan in 2011. Doing better at Fulham.

Frankie Bennett, Andy Williams, Scott Murray and Mark McKeever might have played in the PL once or twice as well but didn't really establish themselves there. All decent wingers for us. Gary Owers possibly played in the top flight for Sunderland in the early 90s.

I'm sure I've missed some as well. We went through about 80 players in the early 2000s who arrived from higher leagues on the back of injury problems.

Counting proper premier league players, not kids from some 1,000 strong academy with 1 league cup sub appearance on loan, it divides into two camps - really, really good and heart not in it

Really, really good - Michael Bridges, Clint Hill

Heart not in it - Paul Warhurst (1 match and buggered off), Danny Cadamarteri (sicknote the whole 2nd season)

Special mention:
Paul Simpson had a few premier league games with Derby and successfully got us promoted as player-manager from the conference (and again to div 1). However he then blotted his copybook by fucking off to preston.

I also give you Clive Allen, who just about extended his long top-flight career into the premier league era with 7 appearances for West Ham

Later, he made three appearances for us and then quit, but I'll let you decide which of "rilly, rilly good" or "heart not in it" he slots into

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Allen#Later_career

Oh, and how did I forget Graham Kavanagh?

Cameo spots for Middlesbrough in the prem's early days, then 1 full season for Wigan in the Prem a decade later

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Kavanagh

As a player for us: Rilly, rilly good, foot like traction engine etc
As a manager: Absolutely appalling, got us relegated and was fired a month into the new season

We had an actual Premirr League winner play a season for us, Tony Gale who signed for us from Blackburn Rovers two seasons after they'd won the title. Played for a season before retiring to take up a media gig. Total quality on and off the park.

A few years back, I was in Prague for a Scotland game against the Czech Republic. The day after the game there was a full card of lower league games on so we went to a couple.

The second game we turned up at was in the 5th or 6th teir and I'd say the standard was probably Isthmian level.

We were completely unaware of this when we turned up but the home side had three former Czech international playing for them. The captain, who's name escapes me had played mainly for Sparta Prague and had a handful of caps. The other two though were Patrik Berger and Vladimir Smicer who were a different level altogether.

Berger's legs were gone and he went off at half time but Smicer still had it. One of the dirtiest games I've ever seen, a co,pledge kicking match. One "tackle" stands out, Smicer received the ball by the touchline just in front of us, fainted to go one way, then went the other. The defender completely failed to read the feint and came charging in and cleared him out. As Smicer pulled himself up, a mate of mine said "why bother Vlad" to him. He looked up, shook his head, shrugged his shoulders and gave us a big grin. Crowd of less than 100.

Dover had Keith Scott grace the GM Vauxhall for one season. For those of you who may need your memory re-jigged, he was Swindon Town's talisman in the 1993/94 season.

Proper old fashioned centre forward, and by that I mean he used to run like he was wearing stilettos in sludge and had the poise of Gerry McCann. Scored 14 goals though, all penalties or unmarked headers, so it was worth going into admin trying to finance his wages.

I'd be surprised in McCormack turns out to be shit. Surprised he's playing at this level really, even at 34.

We had loads of ex-pro's back in the early 00's at Newport who should have been excellent but were total gash. Jonathan Coates, Kwame Ampadu, Roger Freestone, Nathan Blake. Jason Bowen on the other hand was absolutely brilliant - dropped down the levels at least 2 or 3 years too early, and took the piss out of most defenders in the Connie South for a good few years.

All the ones I can think of...

Perry Groves - awful
Matt Ritchie (played in prem before and after a loan spell with us) - brilliant technically, and a phenomenal attitude
Steve Potts - awful
Tony Roberts - best gk I've ever seen in non-league
Keith Scott - didn't make it past pre-season, finished
Matthew Rush - turned up late and scored on his debut... should probably have quit whilst he was ahead
Patrick Agyemang - awful
Jonathan Fortune - played 1 minute, got released
Ben Reeves - average at best
Zavon Hines - incredible for about 20 games, done his ACL and it finished him
Matt Richards (old first division rather than Prem) - absolutely finished by the time he came to us
Danny Hill - technically head and shoulders above everyone else
Mark Brennan - started brilliantly, broke his foot, never the same
Gavin Hoyte - very steady, always liked him
Justin Hoyte - absolute stroller, heart wasn't in it at all
John McGrath (loan) - excellent
Yoann Folly - bang average
Jamie Cureton - still sharper and quicker than most of the team at 40 years old
Nyron Nosworthy - terrible
Gus Caesar (old first division) - thought he was decent but not sure that view is shared by other fans
Paolo Vernazza - really inconsistent, couldn't move particularly well either
Alan Kimble - could not run at all, couldn't believe he kept getting picked
Phil Ifil - terrible player, terrible attitude
Perry Suckling (old first div) - played most of pre-season, we realised we'd made a big mistake and hastily signed someone else, released without playing a league game

That took longer than I expected!

The ones who played for us before going to Premier League such as Pope, Finnan, Townsend, Randolph, Arter, Cargill, Rodak have been much better than the ex players such as Nethercott and Keith Rowland.

If we are talking ex Div 1 players. I would say Paul Barron and Mike Rutherford were the best

I was just doing an edit to add Cockerill. One game while coach, and shortly to become manager.

Grant didn't play.

Hans Segers - 1 cup game

Nicky Banger - 'Meh', but he played in the bizarre (for Woking) season of 2002-03, when we just avoided relegation.

Hans Segers - 1 cup game.

Didn't Peter Bonetti play a cup game too? Admittedly he would be ex top flight rather than PL.

We had Paolo as well but in L2, had something about him, but not effort.

Going from PL to us:

Edgar Davids - amazing
Tony Cottee - amazing player, shit manager
Eddie Newton - bloody awful
Brian Stein - did a job
Gary Breen - legend
Jimmy Greaves - same, apparently
Collins John - hilariously awful
That Arsenal player who got dropped on his shoulder by Tony Adams - not memorable
Brian Marwood - classy, couldn't run
Scott Loach - great at this level
Charlie Macdonald - talented but injury prone
Lee Cook - effortlessly good

I'm sure there have been a fair few more

I think Cockerill played once for us in an emergency.

I want to say it was at Southport, but this may be a faulty memory.

Grant was only manager for 9 (loosing) games or so - he didn't wear the Halves. Too busy with the Dossier.

Lee Hendrie.. Played for us about 20 odd games. I remember I was at the game where he two footed player only moments after coming in as sub and got sent off.

Neville Southall - great
Steve Nichol - class
John Sheridan - fairly uninterested
Mike Newell - can't remember anything beyond an unbelievable sitter he missed in an FA cup game
Ian Snodin - player/manager who steadied the ship on the field
