In my case, i'm not sure she'd have took the option to be honest. But, she would have been in the right frame of mind to make the decision and I imagine she'd have appreciated the option.

But, i accept that isn't always the case. I guess, the key here is if there is even a hint of doubt then it shouldn't be allowed to proceed. And, it should only ever be the person wishing to end their life early's decision. If they're not able to make the decision themselves then it shouldn't be allowed.

I've seen people on twitter say "what if they're just in a low moment when screened". But, I believe the screening process would take place over an extended period of time with the question regulally asked if they wanted to continue. That's how they do it in Switzerland for example.

I'd assume the screening process would follow similar to the process for a transplant. So multiple regular meetings with a Psychologist and numerous other experts over months.

That wouldn’t be quick enough to alleviate most cases.

The timeframe may move but the number of meetings and the various experts wouldn't I'd have thought.

Months would be plenty for a number of conditions I reckon but obviously not all.

With my nan who had dementia, the last 18-24 months of her life were horrible, and it was devastating to just watch her getting worse and worse.

If that was me and I was diagnosed with dementia, I would want to die well before I got to that point.

Maybe, maybe not.

My best mate's grandmother was in a similar state for a couple of years. She would have horrible episodes where she would relive the Germans coming to her village during the war and massacaring nearly everyone - stories she had never told to a soul.

During her occasional bouts of lucidness she would insist that she didn't want to die.
