It has been ridiculous how the UK can leave a free movement bloc shared with nearly 500M people, only for immigration numbers to then explode.

I don't know why people are surprised at Boris - he was always a liberal Tory. I think because he backed Brexit he was associated as right wing by the Oddballs, but that's not his politics. He was the most left-wing Tory leader for generations. See also being far to the left of his party on climate, environment and tax.

Hopefully we can have a rationale national debate on immigration without it devolving into an EU vs non EU debate otherwise nothing will ever get done.




*I know I mentioned the EU above in my posy, but that was intended as a marker for the point Bojo's rules kicked in when the transition period ended. Whilst i'm pro EU, my intention was more to highlight his terrible implementation if post Brexit policies rather than getting into the whole EU debate again.

I'm not suprised, though I don't put his horror policy down to any liberal tendencies. I put it entirely down to his personal ambition, incompetence, lack of joined up thinking and his verring from one thing to another creating disjointed, short-termism.

I hope all the Boris fanboys are re-adjusting their views on him.

From 1998 to 2020 it looks like we osscilatef between 150k to 250k net immigration per year. Some may say that is still too high but that at least was the long term trend regardless of the party in charge.

But, then Boris, the useless fuck, brought in his new immigration system once thr EU transition period ended in 2020, and the net migration numbers coming have exploded.

Year to June 2021 - 254,000
Year to June 2022 - 634,000
Year to June 2023 - 906,000
Year to June 2024 - 728,000

For comparison, the June 12 to June 22 average net migration under EU rules were 221k per year.

So, leaving the EU and replacing it with Bojo's/vote leave genius system has meant net migration is up by 1.638m since it was implemented.

This should illustrate just how bad the post EU system has been....in June 2016 (month of referendum) the total immigration number (832k) was lower than the 2023 net migration number (906k)!

So much for taking back control. They literally took a system that half the country was very unhappy with and made it 3 times worse! How is Boris, Cummings and co not being stuck in the stocks and having rotten veg pelted at them daily?

Your increase includes 250k Ukrainians and 150k Hong Kongers, plus tens of thousands of Afghans, and the addition of care workers to the shortage list.
Also seem to be about 250k extra students, which isn’t a problem if they really are students.
But it’s pretty hard to compare pre/post EU as some of the workers and students would presumably not needed visas before.

We took back control. Then we voted Tory to ensure that Brexit meant Brexit, via well thought out ‘oven ready’ deals etc. Turns out what we wanted as a nation was MORE immigration.
