It has been ridiculous how the UK can leave a free movement bloc shared with nearly 500M people, only for immigration numbers to then explode.
I don't know why people are surprised at Boris - he was always a liberal Tory. I think because he backed Brexit he was associated as right wing by the Oddballs, but that's not his politics. He was the most left-wing Tory leader for generations. See also being far to the left of his party on climate, environment and tax. Rory Stewart in a wig. 28-11-2024, 02:22 PM in response to #82229 Lenny Baryea Wrote: Yep, which partly explains why the Tories got walloped in the recent General Election. Hopefully we can have a rationale national debate on immigration without it devolving into an EU vs non EU debate otherwise nothing will ever get done. *I know I mentioned the EU above in my posy, but that was intended as a marker for the point Bojo's rules kicked in when the transition period ended. Whilst i'm pro EU, my intention was more to highlight his terrible implementation if post Brexit policies rather than getting into the whole EU debate again. 28-11-2024, 02:23 PM in response to #82156 Meerkat Wrote: Starmer should have just said The usual suspects will be along shortly to argue that opposing blasphemy laws is Islamophobic. 28-11-2024, 02:25 PM in response to #82232 28-11-2024, 02:25 PM (This post was last modified: 28-11-2024, 03:50 PM by Mr Nice 2.0.) in response to #82230 Fola Onibuje Wrote: It has been ridiculous how the UK can leave a free movement bloc shared with nearly 500M people, only for immigration numbers to then explode. I'm not suprised, though I don't put his horror policy down to any liberal tendencies. I put it entirely down to his personal ambition, incompetence, lack of joined up thinking and his verring from one thing to another creating disjointed, short-termism. 28-11-2024, 02:53 PM in response to #82215 Mr Nice 2.0 Wrote: I hope all the Boris fanboys are re-adjusting their views on him. Your increase includes 250k Ukrainians and 150k Hong Kongers, plus tens of thousands of Afghans, and the addition of care workers to the shortage list. Also seem to be about 250k extra students, which isn’t a problem if they really are students. But it’s pretty hard to compare pre/post EU as some of the workers and students would presumably not needed visas before. 28-11-2024, 03:01 PM in response to #82230 Fola Onibuje Wrote: It has been ridiculous how the UK can leave a free movement bloc shared with nearly 500M people, only for immigration numbers to then explode. We took back control. Then we voted Tory to ensure that Brexit meant Brexit, via well thought out ‘oven ready’ deals etc. Turns out what we wanted as a nation was MORE immigration. How very welcoming, well done everyone. 28-11-2024, 03:11 PM in response to #82205 28-11-2024, 03:24 PM in response to #82247 |
