Crawley is in West Sussex. East Surrey is mainly rural, with s small number of towns and villages with large property values. Oxted (Starmerville), Godstone, Lingfield, Woldingham, Warlingham, Caterham-on-the-hill.

The big town for East Surrey is Crawley. Then there is a big gap before you get the West Surrey towns that are more similar to each other and certainly dont look toward Crawley. Caterham should be in Croydon borough.

Its madness to dick about with devolving power down to councils without sorting out the boundaries - carrying on using Saxon boundaries that bear little relation to modern social and economic factors is crazy. Despite being a proud Surrey man, born and bred, I realise that Surrey is a nonsense as an administrative unit and has been since a huge chunk of it was carved out to create Greater London.

Lets merge some London Boroughs i.e. Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham. Think of the money saved. Only one Chief Executive instead of 3. Also Department directors such as Housing, Education Social Services could be cut from 3 to 1. Money saved could be spent on additional frontline staff instead of fat cats in ivory towers Of course it happened before when Metropolitan and District councils merged to become London Boroughs. Wonder how much they have saved over 60 years?

Some of them work together to procure certain services…but not enough.

Northants split into two to become more efficient…Somerset merged several districts/unitaries etc to become more efficient… neither seems to have worked.

EOTD, Council’s will soon be spending most of their money on social care - adult or children without serious funds being provided by central government, as I don’t think voters are in the mood for big Council tax rises.

I have visited or driven through all of these places. I can assure you they exist. Godstone once had a proper London Transport bus garage (country green buses), Oxted had a stamp shop and I think Warlngham and Caterham are still on the London Bus network.
