My daughter lives there. The tide always seems to be out when I visit.

A nice ground to play cricket on. One of very few where I seemed either to take wickets or score runs at.

Surrey was prosperous on wool (hence wool sacks in Woking’s badge), and then industry, but being agile Surrey kept moving with the times….unlike the north.

Surrey (or at least the bits that I know) are quite sad in a way. Almost everyone I grew up with has moved out of the area. When I was young there was a Surrey accent (with a slight farmer twang).

It now seems to be an area of recent ‘immigrants’ which I guess will stitch together some identity over time but for now feels like a hotel, where the residents stay because it is nice but if there were somewhere nicer they would move there.

I get that feeling about large swathes of the South East tbh. In an ideal world you’d live in London or some delightful small town or picture postcard village….but they are EFFING EXPENSIVE so people just huddle together in commuter towns along railway lines.

That's about right. Mates from school have all mostly left the big smoke for places like Stevenage, Cheshunt, Chesham, Brighton, Hertford and Bristol. There's very few people left from growing up. Think I'd go mad with boredom living in a commuter town though so still clinging on to London.

It generally works that people who grew up in the big smoke realise by the time they hit 30 its too expensive/stabby so they move to dull commuter towns, whereas those whogrew up in rich, affluent areas move to slums like Stoke Newington/Clapham in order to inject some excitement and drugs into their dull existence.
