Not sure why we have hung on to them for so long. How many people in this country have ever seen them ? Was the worry that that handing them back would set a precedence and we would have give back everything else we "borrowed" from abroad ?

Well, if we're giving those back then I can't see how we can justify having any of the stuff, so I guess Sir Keith has just destroyed the British Museum.

That was part of it.

The other argument was that having all those treasures in one place allows the British Museum to tell a story of antiquity that couldn't be told if they were all scattered to the wind.

Modern technology has put a bit of a dent in that theory however, and is likely to put am even deeper one in times to come.

Just this week in a staff meeting the topic of the British museum came up, and TCMNOS retorted 'there's nothing British about it, it's all Greek & Egyptian'.

Neither myself nor my Glaswegian colleague had any immediate counter.
